Jason C. Eckhardt

I was born on Christmas Day, 1958, and have been drawing ever since. All the Eckhardt family created art, my mother, who was a watercolorist, especially; and with me it was comic strips at first. Then, at age twelve, I discovered a book that changed my life and gave direction to my artwork: d'Aulaire's Norse Gods and Giants. Leafing through this gorgeously illustrated book again and again, I determined that I would one day be the one putting the pictures in the books.

Thirty some years later I am that guy, but with a lot of art in between.

The year after I found the d'Aulaires I discovered the horror fiction of H. P. Lovecraft, and this inspired me to try horror illustration. In 1979 I made my first professional illustrations for Necronomicon Press of West Warwick, RI, and still do work for them to this day. My work for the Press has led to illustration work for such publishers as Chaosium, Arkham House, Doubleday and Dell Magazines. In 1994 I was nominated for Best Artist at the World Fantasy Convention, and was Artist Guest of Honor at NecronomiCon in 1998.

The year 2000 brought a change of scene as I left my native New England for Texas. My artwork, too, took a new path into children's book illustration.

I've illustrated about fifteen or so books for Eakin Press of Austin, as well as for Republic of Texas Press, Univ. of Tennessee Press and others.

Now back in my beloved New England I've branched out into pastels, landscapes and house portraits while still keeping a hand in the horror and children's book fields. The future? Historical illustration would be a blast. It's all art, and I enjoy it all.
